Bài đọc — The Great Zoo Debate
On a sunny Saturday, Maya visited the city zoo with her family. She watched the elephants spray water, laughed at the playful monkeys, and stared wide-eyed at the sleeping lions. “Zoos are amazing!” she said. “I learned so much today.”
But not everyone agrees with Maya. The question “Should zoos exist?” has been debated for many years, and both sides have strong arguments.
People who support zoos say they help animals in important ways. First, many zoos work to protect endangered species — animals that might disappear forever in the wild. For example, the California condor nearly went extinct, with only 27 birds left in 1987. Scientists brought them to zoos, helped them have babies, and later released many back into the wild. Today, there are more than 500 California condors. Supporters also say zoos teach people, especially children, to care about animals. When a child sees a real tiger, she may grow up wanting to protect tigers in the wild.
On the other side, critics argue that zoos are unfair to animals. They point out that even the biggest zoo enclosure is tiny compared to an animal’s natural habitat. An elephant in the wild may walk 30 miles in a single day, but in a zoo it paces back and forth in a small space. Some animals in zoos show signs of stress: they rock side to side, bite the bars, or sleep far more than they would in nature. Critics also say the money spent on zoos — sometimes millions of dollars — could be used to protect animals where they naturally live.
So, are zoos a safe home or a beautiful prison? The answer may depend on the zoo. Modern zoos with large, natural spaces and strong conservation programs look very different from old zoos with small concrete cages.
What do you think?

Góc tranh luận gia đình
Đọc xong, trả lời xong, giờ là phần vui nhất: cả nhà chọn phe và tranh luận. Hai câu để mở đầu (không có câu trả lời sai):
- If you ran a zoo, what would you say to defend it?
- If you were an animal activist, how would you argue back?
Answer key (parents only!)
- B — the whole passage is about the disagreement over zoos.
- Accept any detail from paragraph 3: scientists brought condors to zoos, helped them breed, and released many back into the wild (from 27 birds in 1987 to 500+ today).
- “Enclosure” = the fenced area where a zoo animal lives. Clues: “tiny compared to an animal’s natural habitat” and “small space.”
- No right or wrong — check that your child names a side AND gives one detail from the text.

Should Kids Have a Pet?
